Game Rules[]

[1] [2] [3]
Game Rules

These apply to all servers.

Wurm is a complicated game that attracts many different kinds of players with different reasons for playing. The Wurm Rules are written to help keep this game running as smoothly as possible, while allowing players the freedom to play the game in a way they would like without spoiling the experience for others.

This list of rules is continuously revised to reflect changes in the game and the situations on the various servers. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep up with any rule changes as they are implemented.

The actual length or type of any imposed penalty as listed below may vary depending on the case. There is no discrimination between premium and free accounts with regards to the rules, but please note that some rules may not apply to the Wild server, and this is indicated within the rule.

Account termination " WARNING "

Wurmonline may suspend, modify, terminate, or delete any player account at any time for any reason without notice. Most account terminations or deletions are the result of violations to the EULA or game rules. Accounts terminated or deleted will not be reactivated for any reason.

Wurm Personnel

Personnel includes all members of Code Club AB. Which includes but not limited to all FM / CM / GM / CA / or Developer.

Under no circumstances are you entitled to enter any such activity in game , forums or Irc that is considered Bashing. Bashing is, but not limited to, griefing , slanging , flaming etc.
Players will not Openly insult, berate, or 'verbally' abuse wurm personnel in any way or gesture. A warning may be made, followed by a game ban, if the situation persists.
If you have a gripe with something or someone then you are to forum PM a GM or the Head GM with your concerns.
There will be no airing of such enquiry or dispute in game chat / irc or the forums. This also includes anything dealing with player penalties such as bans etc.
Players will obey any instructions given by a GM.
If they have a problem with that they should do as they are advised and then post a complaint to the Head GM. Failure to abide by the GM instruction will firstly result in a warning to that player, followed by a game ban of 3 days in which a review will determine if further ban time is applicable.

Supplying false information.

Any player deliberately supplying us with false information will be penalised under the griefing rules.

Naming

Deeds or items:

You may not choose any name that includes swear words or words that are seen to be defamatory, obscene, hateful, racially or religiously offensive.

The name must not violate the rights of any other individual or company, nor be seen to impersonate any public figure or related to pop culture or personas.

If your unsure of your name selection ask any GM for advice.

Breaching this rule could result in the deed being disbanded or the item being destroyed.

Macroing

Definition: Macroing is the use of a program that automatically performs actions for you, this is a game unbalancing activity and as such is dealt with harshly

Key locking (IE weighing down a key on your keyboard) a bound key is illegal, as is any contrivance to automate game actions not intended as part of the game mechanics.
Such actions will be considered under the heading of macro's and will be penalised as such."

Punishment First Offense: 30 day IP ban, character permanently banned.
Second Offense: Permanent account ban.

Cheating

Definition: Cheating is the abuse of any exploit / bug listed below, or method of gaining skill or obtaining items that isn't as it was intended. (macros already covered and excluded)
Sniffing the game communication data, trying to hack the server, or changing the client in any way is not acceptable.
Using any tools that directly interacts with the Wurm Online client or with the network communication to enhance gameplay is not acceptable.
It's also not acceptable to connect to the Wurm Online game server with anything other than the official client.
This includes running macros, running a packet sniffer to intercept the network communication, and making any type of bot or custom client for Wurm Online.

Exploits

Exploiting is the abuse of a bug as listed in the following list.
If its not on this list then there isnt any exploit or bug abuse.

1/ Terraforming / digging close to village/ settlement walls and houses will in some cases cause them to contort. This is not supposed to happen. It can be almost impossible in some cases for players to correct this.
Use of this to purposely grief any player will be penalized. We are looking for a fix on this so this is a temporary ruling.

2/ Planning or building a house over a completed merchant stall isnt an intended function. Likewise dropping a completed stall inside a house or plan isnt an acceptable action. Both are considered as exploits and to use them to disadvantage another player is considered griefing.

3/ Champion exploiting.
Ref: http://wurmonline.com/forum/index.php?topic=48959.0

Quote from: RolfIt's pretty apparent that a champ can stay champ by killing his own characters and raiding his own deed.
I think Gavin put it nicely:
"the proposed 'champion points' system will make keeping your character champion a full time job if you play by the rules, or a exploit fest otherwise. Neither are desirable for me. "

As most of you know, I am very keen on coding preventive measures against exploits rather than trust humanly produced evidence and game master monitoring or try to hunt down players via ip addresses and payment streams. This is why there are diminishing returns on killing the same enemy over and over for instance.

I will however make an exception to this rule here and state that if we find evidence that you are draining your own or a friends deeds or killing characters provided only as a service for champion points all involved characters will be banned and deeds removed without refunds. It will be considered exploiting.
Such cases will be very clear and happen repeatedly so don't worry about playing a champ or killing people who don't move or resist because they are afk.

Punishment: The Punishment for cheating will vary massively and depend upon the circumstances, the method involved, up to and including permanent ban from Wurm and loss of skills.

Bugs If you find a bug, you report it to /dev in the first case , then you will probably be asked to follow up with some details. Bugs have to be fixed by Rolf, but in some cases a GM will provide a temporary solution, and or perscribe an action till the bug can be evaluated.
Bugs in any PvP situation will not be visited or interfered with by GM for any reason until all parties involved confirm to a GM that all PvP action has ceased.

Chat Abuse

Definition: Chat abuse is breaking of the chat rules outlined below, this includes all chat channels and IRC Wurm.
Irc Wurm channel is part of Wurm Online and will be monitored under the game chat rules and penalties as listed. Any such penalties will be adjudicated to the players game account.

The following chat rules apply to everyone, which includes all players and wurm staff members.

1 ) You may never purposefully or willingly attempt to disrupt or troll any chat.

2 ) You must not spam chat in any way, and this includes the use of capital letters, or graphics.
3 ) You may not harass (sexually or otherwise), verbally abuse, threaten, berate or cause unwanted distress to anyone.

4 ) You may not use sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive language. This includes workarounds, symbols, links, misspelling, or graphical substitutes.

5 ) You may not discuss topics which are likely to cause conflict. These include but are not limited to politics, religion, race, gender or sexual orientation.

6 ) You may not discuss illegal activities both in the physical and virtual world. This includes but is not limited to drugs, drug usage, ‘warez’ (including illegal torrents), game exploit usage, macros and all other disallowed game practices as per the game rules.

7 ) You must use English if possible when speaking in public chats, like Kingdom chat, PA Help and when making support calls. If you cannot use English, a translator may be a good option.

8 ) You may never impersonate any member of Wurm Online staff.

9 ) The CA chat channel is for players that have game questions for the CA team to answer. CA control that channel and players will abide by any directive issued by a CA as to the use and conduct on that channel. Failure to abide by any such directive may result in a penalty being issued.

10) You should never challenge moderation5 in public. All issues relating to moderation should go to the moderator in question. If a satisfactory solution cannot be achieved then post your concerns to the Head GM.

Penalties in most cases may start with a warning but if the suituation warrants it, the offending person may be muted forthwith. GM and CM have the right to issue warnings and mutes as they see necessary to enforce these rules. In some cases excessive rule breaking or deliberate verbal attacks may warrant banning.

Account Security

I would suggest to everyone to look at the type of password they are using and where they use it.

1/ Don't use the same password in forums and game.

2/ Don't use similar passwords on vent or other forums.

3/ If unsure of password compromise , change it now.

Please keep you password secure at all times.
Never give you password to another or allow anyone other than yourself to use your account. You are solely responsible for the security of your account.

A player account gives personal and individual access to the Wurm Online game. Unauthorised access to another player's account is not accepted as any part of the Wurm Online game or some kind of strategy, but a violation of their private data. Any player who accesses any account without authorisation will have their own account and any subsidiary accounts permanently deleted from the database.

Account Theft
Recent events has brought to our attention the need to review our policy and process on dealing with account disputes. In the past we have gone through a number of stances involving account disputes and thats not acceptable for us or for you the players. So as from now the following policy and process will be adhered to in all cases concerning account ownership disputes.

Policy :

Account sales:

Code Club AB condones account and item sales, as we believe that players have the right to capitalize on their investment in wurm. We do not however support such activity, and will not be held responsible for any remedial action or loss that occurs, as any such activity is entirely at your risk.
In the advent of account theft or ownership dispute GM will only intervene as a last resort if there is compelling evidence provided. At that stage We reserve the right to freeze a disputed account until due process ( see below ) is concluded.

Shared accounts:

Code Club AB does not condone sharing or contracting accounts.
Players entering any agreement concerning sharing or contracting accounts do so totally at their own risk.
In the advent of account theft or ownership dispute GM will only intervene as a last resort if there is compelling evidence provided. At that stage we reserve the right to freeze a disputed account until due process ( see below ) is concluded.

Account dispute Process:

1/ We will immediately freeze a disputed account upon receipt of such compelling evidence supporting an ownership claim to a disputed account. Freezing an account eliminates any possible further damage or loss to the account while evidence is gathered.

2/ We will issue demands on all disputing parties to supply receipts or any data that they have to support their claim. Such demands should be met within 5 days, unless we receive a valid application for extension. Such extensions will not be granted for a period more then 3 days, after which we will then move onto the adjudication of the claims.

3/ We will after gathering all available evidence, review it in discussion on GM forum. We will then make judgment based on our findings to the best of our ability.

If we have insufficent evidence to make a judgement on ownership of the account, we will dismiss the claim. Dismissing the claim in either case will result in that the person holding the account will retain that account.
Further claim can be sought, but the case will not be re opened unless there is further compelling evidence provided.

The decision on whether evidence is compelling or not will be decided by the GM board.

All judgements made are FINAL. No further correspondence or appeal will be accepted.

Disclaimer :
Previous cases will not be granfathered into this new policy.
Code Club AB is not responsible in any form for loss of premium time or any harm or loss that may occur to any parties involved in account disputes.

Freedom Isles ( Excluding Chaos ) & GV Server Specific Rules

Freedom Code of Conduct
We strongly suggest all players read the Freedom Code of Conduct as it contains important information for Freedom and GV servers. http://wurmonline.com/forum/index.php?topic=40290.0

Griefing
Griefing is any harassment such as, defamation of character (insulting their race, gender, creed, nationality or sexuality), continuous use of unfavorable emotes, or failure to abide to a GM instruction.

lockpicking.
It is illegal to lockpick anything that does not belong to you.

Breaking fences.
It is illegal to break any fence that does not belong to you AND is also a part of an enclosure.
Enclosure is defined as a completely enclosed secured area, composed of fences, gates or walls, and attached to or surrounding a completed intact house. Any such house/s being part of the enclosure must be visible from all parts of the fencing encompasing the enclosure area.

Animals and Livestock.
It is illegal to take, tame or kill any animals in an enclosure not of your own, or any animals secured and fully fenced on a deed that you are not part of.
Enclosure is defined as a completely enclosed secured area, composed of fences, gates or walls, and attached to or surrounding a completed intact house. Any such house/s being part of the enclosure must be visible from all parts of the fencing encompasing the enclosure area.

Highways.
A/ It is illegal to block, terraform, alter or destroy any highways.( Application to conduct any of these activites may be sent to GM for approval)

B/ If you have or choose to place a deed over a highway, you are still required to follow part A, and leave the highway clear, passable and Kos free.

C/ Building a highway through a deed obligates the village concerned to abide by the highway rules and therefore it forfiets the right to kos.

Highways are defined as being at least 2 paved tiles wide road with or without barriers, or a single paved tile road with sand barriers.
There follows one exception to this; If your deed is the terminus of a single highway, you may then position locked gates on deed across that highway providing KoS griefing rules remain adhered to.

Heritage Items. Such items as major tunnels, items or sites that are deemed important by the GM to enhancing the playability for players will be named "Heritage" sites. Heritage items will be adequately sign posted so there isnt any confusion.
All such Heritage sites are under GM protection and any destruction, alteration or other action that results in restricting the use or access of such items will be governed under the game rules for griefing.

KOS, All Freedom servers:
It's the right of any mayor to kos anyone as they see fit, except for any deed covering a highway. In such cases the village waives any right to Kos anyone.

In order to set KoS on anyone the village must have a one tile allowance between the deed edge and any gate that will lock upon the village alarms being sounded. Anyone set on KoS must be allowed a clear avenue to remove themselves from that deed. Not allowing this will be considered as griefing and is illegal.

GM may issue an instruction and possibly a warning to the player or players in any case refered to as griefing. Failure to abide by this instruction or warning could result in the player or players involved being banned. If you have a problem with the instruction, you should do as you are advised and then post any complaint to the Head GM.

Penalties:
Penalties could be a warning, or a 3-7 day ban, or could result in the player account put before the GM Board for possible permanent account ban. This can alter depending on the severity of the case

Trading
Freedom/GV server trading with players is considered a contract, whether it be for money or services. There isn't any insurance on trading or contracts, but failure to comply to a contract could be considered theft and will be dealt with as "Griefing" under the game rules.

Merchant stalls :

A/ Merchant stalls should not be placed in a villages perimeter unless you have an agreement with that village.
This doesn't make it illegal to do so, but it would be the common sense way in doing things and would ensure a better community acceptance.

B/ Merchant stalls are not to be moved, blocked or restricted from view or access by anyone other then the owner.
C/ Dropping or expanding deeds over stalls isn't illegal, but the deed owner should allow proper access for the removal of the merchant and its stock.

D/ Stalls are not allowed to be housed over or dropped into a house plan.

Boats :

Vessel Salvage:

It is the players responsibility to ensure a boat is locked and moored if unattended. Failure to do so may result in that vessel being "salvaged" by someone. Owners may pursue recovery of their missing vessel by any lawful means necessary, provided there isnt a salvage claim posted. Physicaly interfering with such recovery is illegal and will be considered under griefing rules. In the case of recovery under salvage notice, the default salvage fees ( B/ ) have to be paid to the salvager and reasonable access made to the owner to allow recovery. Stealing occurs when a boat is taken without salvage notice, and it is then considered as griefing.

A/ When a boat goes missing or is salvaged, the player or salvager posts a "Missing/Recovered boat " forum notice on "Vessel salvage/missing" forum ; http://wurmonline.com/forum/index.php?board=63.0 with the name and details, contacts etc.
B/ Salvager and owner then can negotiate a return. If negotiation is in dispute the default fees below will apply.

Default Salvage fee:
Rowboat: 10c , Sailboat: 50c , Corbita : 1s, cog : 1s, Knarr 1s, Caravel 5s.
Default recovery fees will be paid to a GM who will deposit the fee into the "Freedom Community Trust Fund". This will be dispersed back into community projects, or worthy causes may apply for funding from the trust. A committee will be appointed for this fund from Wurm team members.

C/ Recovery of a salvaged vessel is only possible after any fees have been paid. It is the owners responsibility to recover the vessel.
Only the owner may recover a vessel, no agents.

D/ Salvager may have full use of the vessel until such time the fee has been paid.

Note :
1/ GM do not guarantee recovery, repair or reparation of any kind for destroyed, damage or lost property.

Expiry time :

Two months after a salvage notice has been posted the vessel will be assumed unwanted by the owner.
Such unwanted vessels will be offered to the salvager at double the default fee. Such fee and ownership transfer will be conducted by a GM and collected fees paid into the FCTF. If the salvager does not wish to purchase the vessel they can continue using it or notify GM of its abandonment.

Abandoned vessels

Abandoned vessels are those that have been left in such places that constitute a problem to playability such as on deeds. An abandoned vessel can be brought to the notice of a GM and if found appropriate the vessel will be moved sufficiently away from the immediate area of concern.

Wilderness:
Is any area not covered by a deed.

Settling in the wilderness, is tricky and open to frustration from land grabbers, vandals and outlaws. We stress that placing a deed first in every case is essential to assuring possesion of the area of your choice.

Hints:
For non deeded wilderness settlements, use house gates not ordinary gates, and good ql stone walls. Strategicaly place housing to restrict other players dropping a deed over anything you wish to protect.
This will help you to help us in restricting possible Griefing.

Perimeters:
Perimeters are considered as part of the wilderness.

Firstly we have to clarify that the deed perimeter you pay for is only an insurance to possibly expand your existing deed. It does not give the deed holder ownership of that area.
Also you can only expand out until your perimeter touches another deeds perimeter. So in that respect if your perimeter already touches another perimeter you cannot expand unless you have purchased extra tiles then the default 5 tiles. If you have purchased extra tiles then you will have the ability to expand until you reach the default 5 tile perimeter.

Epic Servers Specific Rules

KOS, Epic servers:
It's the right of any mayor to kos anyone as they see fit.

Griefing:
Griefing on Epic is very simple, no defamation of character (insulting their race, gender, creed, nationality or sexuality).

GM will issue an instruction and possibly a warning to the player or players in any case refered to above as griefing, Failure to abide by this instruction or warning could result in the player or players involved being banned. If you have a problem with that you should do as you are advised and then post any complaint to the Head GM.

punishment: The Punishment for Griefing will vary, depending upon the circumstances and the method involved up to and including permanent ban from Wurm.

Chaos Server Specific Rules

KOS, Chaos server:
It's the right of any mayor to kos anyone as they see fit.

Griefing:
Griefing on Chaos is very simple, no defamation of character (insulting their race, gender, creed, nationality or sexuality).

GM will issue an instruction and possibly a warning to the player or players in any case refered to above as griefing, Failure to abide by this instruction or warning could result in the player or players involved being banned. If you have a problem with that you should do as you are advised and then post any complaint to the Head GM.
